The Apple Store Accessability Statement

The Forest of Dean is a unique area - please read and take note of the facilites available and information about the Forest before you book.


The Apple Store is the self-contained ground floor of the owner's home - an 1860s farmhouse near Blakeney - comprising a kitchen/living room, separate bedroom and separate bathroom, the whole being on one level.  The property is off the road, set in about an acre of garden, orchard and paddock which guests are welcome to use.  Private parking for 2 cars on tarmac driveway immediately outside the unit, covered storage area for cycles, motorbikes, canoes etc.  A private garden area with BBQ is for the exclusive use of guests.  Guests are welcome to use about 1 acre of paddock/orchard, shared with owners.

There is open access to the brook and weir which bounds the orchard; the owner's pets (dog and cats) have free-run of the land, and wild animals regularly visit the orchard

Before booking...
  • Access to the property is via a Forestry Commission track, wide enough to accommodate a normal-sized car; vehicles such as landrovers and vans use the track daily; vehicles wider than a car/landrover may have difficulty with access.
  • Private, off-road parking immediately outside the unit on tarmac driveway.
  • Further parking is available on the roadside, some 50 yards from the property.
  • Covered area for storage of bicycles, etc.
  • Recycling boxes, compost bin, Wheelie bin on site.
  • Covered washing line.
  • 1 step into front door, with ramp available.
  • Door height within the property is between 5ft 10" and 6ft.  Ceiling height throughout 6ft 3"
  • The bath has a shower attachment.  There is no separate shower unit.
  • Dogs are welcome by arrangement as detailed on booking page.
  • Any other pets - please check with owners before booking.
  • Please note; Owners of The Apple Store have their own pets which have free-run of the premises.  Guests must keep their own pets under control and respect the rights of the owners in regard to pets.
  • The property is in a rural location where sheep, wild boar, deer, ducks and other wildlife roam freely.   Keep your pets under control at all times.
  • Smoke alarms fitted and a fire blanket is provided.
  • No stairs within the property; access to the terrace/patio, private parking and private garden area is flat.
Before arrival...
  • Stay safe.  Note the speed restrictions on A48 are 50mph except on the short distances of dual carriageway.  This road is notorious for accidents.  Please drive with care.
  • Use the map and directions provided.  Satnav navigation is not reliable.  It may be helpful to give some indication of expected arrival time and to 'phone if you have any difficulty in finding Maytree Cottage/The Apple Store.
  • Nearest shop is in Blakeney village centre, and this is usually open until 8pm.  Nearest supermarkets and petrol garages are in Lydney (3 miles).  Nearest 24hr supermarkets are in Chepstow or Gloucester, both 17 miles.  Nearest ATM cash dispenser - Lydney (24hrs), Blakeney Post Office during opening hours. 
  • Your Welcome pack includes tea, coffee making facilities and cakes.
  • A Breakfast pack can be pre-ordered and includes milk, bread, butter, sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms etc. (see Add ons and special offers page)
  • Bring your own pet food.
  • Doggie bags are provided - please clean up after your pet and put waste in the bin provided.
On arrival...
  • Parking on tarmac drive outside The Apple Store, or park on the road and walk the few yards to Maytree Cottage.  The track is narrow; if in doubt, please park on the road and walk the few yards to the farmhouse before driving down to The Apple Store.
  • Arrival - after 3.30pm - 6.30pm.  Please contact us on 01594 516554 if delayed to ensure you can be met on arrival.
  • Departure - by 10.30 am please.  Call at the farmhouse to return keys.  Your deposit will be returned in full upon satisfactory inspection of the unit.
  • The front door is lower than standard and approached via a low step; a ramp is available.
  • Ceilings and doors are low; taller guests (over 6') be aware of limited headroom especially in doorways and when using the shower attachment.
  • Bath towels and hand towels are provided.  Bed linen and tea-towels are provided.
  • The unit is cleaned weekly on change-over.
  • A washing machine and laundry facilities are provided.
  • General cleaning equipment (mop, bucket, vaccuum cleaner, broom, dustpan and brush) are provided for use of guests during their stay.
  • Central heating is run from the solid fuel Rayburn in the farmhouse, and provides background heat in cold weather.  The AGA is electric, and will be left on a low setting for heating during cold weather.  A log effect convector heater in the sitting area is for use of guests.
  • Hot water for the bath and shower from an electric immersion tank.
During your stay...
  • The Apple Store is the ground floor level of a family home; soundproofing has been installed, but there may be times especially during the day when music or other noise is audible.
  • The Apple Store is in a rural location; tolerance of countryside sounds, smells and the way of life is required; you may hear a cockerel crow, sheep bleating or someone using a chainsaw.  We have a natural waterfall at the end of the garden which we cannot turn off!  The Apple Store is located off the road in a quiet residential area with two immediate neighbours and other cottages nearby.  We are in a valley, so any music or sound outside e.g. dogs barking, is naturally amplified.  The Apple Store is in the quiet residential hamlet of Furnace Valley with private cottages nearby; please be considerate to our neighbours!
  • Strictly no smoking indoors at The Apple Store.  Smokers please use the sheltered area and garden, and dispose of cigarette butts in the domestic waste bins.
  • Guests are welcome to use the Apple Store's private garden at any time.  The orchard/paddock/kitchen garden are always open and shared with the owners and their pets.  Please be aware we have a dog and cats who live here.
  • As wild boar come onto the land we advise dogs are always kept under control and care is taken when on the paddock or orchard, or in the surrounding area and woods at dusk and after dark.  Sheep are sometimes grazed on an adjoining paddock.  Wild deer and free-roaming sheep are everywhere in the Forest of Dean - dog owners please be aware.
  • Guests may harvest any fruit or vegetables and collect eggs for their own use during their stay.  Farm-gate sales of garden produce are also available as and when in season.
  • Please respect the growing areas and move carefully without breaking plants.
  • A selection of plants is often available for sale; please don't take cuttings or dig up plants in the garden or Forest.
  • Power cuts are not uncommon; they are usually brief, and a torch and lamps are provided for such an event.
  • The Forest of Dean is not blessed with good reception for mobile phones or WiFi - please be aware.  In emergency, guests are welcome to use the owner's home telephone.
  • There is a charge at car parks throughout the Forest of Dean.
  • Cash point ATMs are only reliably available in the towns (Coleford, Cinderford, Lydney) so guests are advised to keep some cash with them.
  • Remember - The Forest of Dean is a managed woodland of about 250 000 acres.  It is not a park.  There are no regular patrols, no streetlights, and no made-up footpaths, and lavatories/snack bars only at a few designated sites.  Please respect the wild-ness of the Forest.
  • We recommend that you Plan your route, take a map and compass, take extra clothing and basic first aid kit, and tell someone when you expect to return.  Do not depend on having mobile phone reception in the woods.
  • The nearest 24 hour supermarkets are 18 miles away (Chepstow or Gloucester), as are any late-opening stores.  Most pubs close at 11pm. , likewise off-licenses, garages etc.  The local shop opens at 7 am (8 am on Sundays) and is open till 8 pm most days.
  • Nearest bus-stop on A 48, about 5 minutes walk.
  • Nearest train station - Lydney (4 miles)  Pickup available on request
  • Nearest fuel station - Lydney (4 miles).
  • There is a good GP's surgery and dispenary in the village, and an A&E department at Lydney hospital for minor injuries.  The nearest full A&E department is at Gloucester Royal Infirmary.
  • Local vets - contact details provided in the Welcome pack.
  • Places of Worship - Blakeney has All Saints C/E parish church and a Baptist chapel, details of services outside.  Lydney has a Catholic chuch as well as a Baptist, United Reformed, Methodist and Evangelical fellowship, and the C/E parish church.  Stroat Evangelical Mission is about 10 miles south on A48.
  • Gloucester has a Mosque, Hindu Temple and Synagogue.
  • Please make full use of the vouchers included in the Welcome pack.  By doing so you will greatly assist small local businesses in the Forest, as well as ensuring your carbon footprint stays as small as possible.
  • Ask at the farmhouse for advice or if you need anything urgently; we will help if we can.
On departure...
  • Guests must vacate the property by 10.30 am on the day of departure.
  • Report to the farmhouse with the key when ready to depart; the premises will be checked for damage/loss of property and your deposit will be returned upon satisfactory inspection.

Terms & Conditions

General: The Apple Store is let as "Holiday Lets" as defined in the Housing Act 1988. Guests may occupy a cottage only for a holiday as agreed when a booking is confirmed. "The Apple Store" is the ground floor apartment of the owner's home.

Reservations can be made by phone, e-mail or letter. Initial bookings will be held for 7 days as Provisional, with Confirmation upon receipt of deposit in order for the holiday to be considered as booked; otherwise the reservation will be considered as no longer valid and will return to being available.

An advance deposit of 25% of total rental (non-refundable) must accompany the written Confirmation for the reservation of the cottage.

The balance of the total rental cost must be paid in full at least 4 weeks prior to commencement of holiday. Failure to send the balance payment by the due date, may be viewed as the customer cancelling the holiday. Under such circumstances, the deposit will not be refunded.

If you cancel your booking you must immediately notify us in writing. In the event of a cancellation you will still be liable to pay the total amount due. However, if we manage to re-let the accommodation, 75% of the total price will be returned. You are advised to take out cancellation insurance to cover this eventuality.

The cottages are available after 3:30 p.m. on day of arrival. Arrivals after 6pm, please inform the owner to ensure that you will be met to gain access.  Accommodation in the cottages is restricted to the number of persons stated at booking form. Cottages are to be vacated by 10.30 a.m. on day of departure.

Customers are responsible for keeping and leaving the cottage in a clean and tidy condition. Charges will be made for cleaning and breakages.

Reservations for all young male or female parties will only be accepted at the owners' discretion.

Customers are requested not to smoke inside the property.

Dogs must be kept under control at all times. Other pets by arrangement with Mrs Rose at booking. Pet owners are responsible for all mess or damage caused by their pets whilst on the property, and charged for any cleaning or breakages caused by their animals.  Our own pets and livestock (dog, cat, chickens and ducks) have free-run of the land outside The Apple Store.

The Apple Store is in a quiet residential area; guests are requested to be aware of neighbours when making unnecessary noise and when using the shared access track. Soundproofing has been fitted, but there will inevitably be some noise from the movement of the owner's family living in the main house above The Apple Store.

Faulty or damaged equipment/fittings must be reported immediately.  We shall make every effort to rectify any faults or make repairs to equipment or services as soon as possible, should the need arise. We cannot however, be held responsible for any such breakdowns or loss.  Complaints made after guests have left the property will not be entered into, or compensation given.

If for any reason beyond the owners control (e.g. fire, flood damage) the property is not available for the date of the holiday booked, all rent and charges paid in advance by the customer will be refunded in full. The customer shall have no further claim against the owners.

We cannot accept liability for injury or loss of life to any person within the premises. Neither can we accept liability for loss or damage to any property or vehicle brought onto the premises. We recommend that the customer takes out his own private insurance as required.

We are not registered for VAT and therefore there will be no associated charges.
